Spotlight: Maximo Nivel

This month we are excited to present Maximo Nivel. If you have any interest in the Spanish language or teaching English abroad, this is an awesome opportunity! With a variety of internships and volunteer programs, and locations in four countries, there is a perfect fit for everyone.

How Maximo Nivel began:

Maximo Nivel is a family-owned and operated organization. The founders, Ken and Giovanna Jones, started the first institute in Cusco in 2003. Ken had been teaching English as a hobby for a few years, but saw a real lack of client-service oriented institutes in Cusco and realized the need. It grew from there, as they added on Spanish language instruction, TEFL/TESOL certification, as well as volunteer and internship programs. The Costa Rica branch opened in 2006, and the Guatemala branch in 2009, and all three institutes continue to work as multi-cultural centers that encourage language and cultural sharing.

How it works:

Maximo Nivel is recognized by the Ministry of Education in Peru, the Ministry of Education in Guatemala, ALTO – Association of Language Travel Organizations, Universidad Rural in Guatemala and Brookhaven College in the US. Though we offer a few different programs, an integral part of the volunteer and internship model is to encourage language study in the country to let people take full advantage of the experience. Most live with local host families or in our volunteer and Spanish learner house, take language classes and work at a project.

What volunteer projects are available?

We try to have a range of opportunities available at each site, ranging from cultural programs to pre-professional service-learning opportunities and internships. Volunteers can spend their time working with children, teaching English, contributing to environmental efforts like turtle conservation or reforestation in the Amazon, doing construction or working with clinics and healthcare organizations like homes for disabled children.

Why Maximo Nivel:

The programs are very flexible, so volunteers can choose a program suitable for their needs and schedules. Volunteers come for as little as a week or as much as a year, and can get involved in multiple projects throughout our sites during their stay. We host Gap Year students, students on spring break, families and those on mid-career breaks. Maximo Nivel is open to volunteers from all stages of life, and offers up comfortable home base facilities to set volunteers at ease and give visitors a chance to get to know each other.
